Thankful Thursday feels a bit different today. Not due to of a lack of things to be thankful for. On the contrary, our hardest moments can often be a spotlight on the greatest things to be thankful for, which is the people in our school and community. Our school has been through so much in a short period of time. However, I believe in the power of a school with one heartbeat and the power of a community that rallies around one another in the difficult moments. I am so thankful and grateful for our crisis team for responding and leading through the multiple tragedies of late, our students for their bravery and resilience in supporting each other through their grief, and our staff for wrapping their comforting arms around the students and their colleagues through both words and actions. But today, I'd be remiss if I didn't dedicate this Thankful Thursday to those who have responded when the stakes were highest, our Volga Fire Department and the Brookings County Sheriff's Department. Thank you for being there when we needed you the most!
We welcome the MS SDMEA Festival that we are hosting today.

This Thankful Thursday shout out goes to Mrs. Jerzak, our FACS teacher. Mrs. Jerzak is the latest recipient of our Spark Plug Award. Her nomination from Mrs. Schmidt says it best about how wonderful Mrs. Jerzak is as a person and a teacher:
The Spark Plug award is given to someone who is innovative, takes risks and makes a difference for kids. In my experiences, both as an educator and as a parent, I have found that this person is always willing to help students. She creates a respectable relationship with her students from middle school through high school. As her students near the end of their high school years, she has been instrumental in being encouraging and having effective conversations with those making post-secondary decisions.
In her classroom, she develops unique activities in line with the current needs. One example was sewing lanyards when the students had to carry their lunch tickets. She finds innovative ways to keep students on task and excited about her content. She is motivating with her kindness and encourages students to do their best in order to be to successful. She has a calm demeanor, but maintains control in her classroom, creating a culture of mutual respect.
As a staff member, she has been instrumental in creating wellness activities for the staff, as well as planning staff social outings. I appreciate the extra efforts you have put in, Natalie, to help build strong, positive long lasting relationships. Thank you for all you do and for being an amazing educator.
