Sioux Valley NHS

Selection Procedure

The National Honor Society chapter of Sioux Valley High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, character, service, and leadership. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a principal-appointed faculty council of at least five members, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school.

Scholarship:  At the conclusion of the fall 2025 semester, students in grade eleven, with an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, are eligible to be considered for membership. Beginning with the 2025-26 school year, students in grades eleven and twelve, with an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better at the start of the school year, are eligible to be considered for membership.

Character:  To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on the candidate, which include but are not limited to: attendance, interactions with students and staff, and overall contribution to the culture and climate of Sioux Valley High School.

Service and Leadership:  Each applicant fills out the Student Information Form that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.

Any solicited faculty input and all Student Information Forms are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or nonselection according to a predetermined schedule.

Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria throughout their membership.

All eligible applicants will be notified of their eligibility via letter, and may access the student information form here.
